If you are a writer, or interested in the craft of writing, you will love this offering from Man Booker Prize winner (2003 – VERNON GOD LITTLE) DBC Pierre.

This how-to is an irreverent, often satirical look at the practicalities of writing. It explores the mystery of why we tell stories by telling stories and sharing experiences, no matter how thorny or politically incorrect. This gives the book a biographical feel and often provides humour and insight together. As is his way, the writing pulls no punches with politeness or rose tinting. Do not be offended by swearing.

I’m not sure what I expected, but RELEASE THE BATS is unexpectedly thought provoking and, I have to say, pretty inspiring. It is a hopeful book, one that reinforces that you don’t have to be a certain kind of human to write and write well. What you must be, is prepared to examine yourself and take a good look at how the world works through your lenses, and then to relentlessly mine that knowledge for your stories.

Well worth a read. Go ahead, release YOUR Bats!
